SYSTEMIC STUFF ( + occasional nonsense ) IN THE NEWS . . . . DECONSTRUCTED FOR POSSIBLE MUTUAL BENEFIT

RSS INFO |
![]() What's RSS anyway ?
Let’s imagine that you have a few of favourite sites which tend to post up new items a few times during the day ( or night ). You don’t want to have to keep going to all the sites just to check if there’s a new item. It would be much better if a message popped-up on your desktop every time a new post was available. That’s RSS. You can download a simple, free, ‘open source’, ( i.e. spyware free ) though slightly dy5lexic, RSS reader from feedreader.com. Or, another open source option : rssowl ( needs java ) There are plenty of others available. Sometimes known as ‘Aggregators’. They check the ‘RSS feeds’, of the sites you’re interested in, at preset intervals – if there’s new info, a message with rough details of the new post will appear. To get these rough details, the aggregator goes to the sites you’ve asked it to, and looks for an RSS feed, which is a cut-down-to-size file ( probably written in XML or ATOM code ) which the site owner provides, listing its new posts. Once you’ve installed your aggregator just ‘point it at’ the RSS feeds of interest, in our case it’s www.Really Magazine/rss.xml Saves time – and www bandwidth. ( In theory . . . . )
